The difference between probiotics and prebiotics is actually quite simple. 

Prebiotics are the food source used to help the healthy bacteria (probiotics) flourish in your intestinal tract.  They are also referred to as synbiotics.  The most common form of prebiotic is made from fructooligosaccharide molecules, which are sugar moecules that contain fructose.  The human body does not have the ability to digest prebiotics, so they are passed through the stomach into the intestines where healthy bacteria use them as food to grow and thrive.

Probiotics are the actual healthy bacteria strains that live within your intestinal tract that help support your immune system and a myriad of other benefits.  Actually, scientific research has shown that having a healthy intstinal tract also helps the bacterial colonies in your mouth, genital areas and even your skin!  By using a good probiotic supplement you can basically re-program your bodies natural defenses to keep pathogenic bacteria from taking root within your body and literally breaking your body down over a period of time.

Did you know that the human colon contains around 400 strains of various microorganisms?  Based on that, it’s unlikely that taking a supplement with only a single strain of bacteria will have a major impact in recolonizing your colon.  For example, I’m talking about probiotics that only have one strain listed on the bottle.  Popular ones contain just acidophilus, which will help, but don’t count on a miracle from just that.  You need a probiotic supplement like Primal Defense Ultra, which contains 13 different species of beneficial bacteria to actually make a noticeable difference in your health.

As an avid fan of probiotics, I searched high and low to give you the best information possible on probioitc tablets.  Frankly, there aren’t that many in tablet form for people.  However, Biogaia makes a tablet form for children called BioGaia Probiotic Chewable Tablets, which contains a healthy dose of 100 million Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis and can be used by both children and adults.  However, if you’re looking for a more balanced probiotic that contains multiple strains of healthy bacteria then check out probiotics for children to see the top three probiotics for children, but if you’re searching for adult probiotics, then check out our probiotic supplements page for a list of the top ten probiotics for adults.

I haven’t found a probiotic tablet that contains multiple strains of bacteria like found in primal defense ultra, so if you know of one, please comment and let me know.  The majority of the probiotic tablets on the market contain just acidophilus or lactobacillus reuteri.  However, there are a few on the market that contain multiple strains of beneficial bacteria, but these appear to be capsules even though they are labeled as tablets on the websites.

Americans love to eat, and more are choosing healthier meals than ever before. Next Generation Organic Dairy, a Wisconsin dairy that makes cheeses made only with certified organic raw milk, today announced the introduction of a new line of gourmet, probiotic-fortified cheese and cheese sticks.

The new line of probiotic cheeses was inspired by the growing body of evidence demonstrating the benefits of probiotics in a wide variety of health conditions and growing consumer interest and demand for probiotic food alternatives for refrigerated yogurts. The cheese and cheese sticks will make there debut at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin from September 30th – October 4th in the Normande Cattle Pavilion at the Next Generation Dairy booth. Full distribution of the cheese will begin December 2008, in six delicious flavors, and will come packaged in eight ounce packs, six individually wrapped 1-ounce sticks or single sticks.

The process for making the new probiotic cheese starts with the same low temperature as Next Generation’s other organic raw milk cheeses not exceeding 102°F. The probiotic ingredient, GanedenBC30, strain of Bacillus coagulans is added after the cheese curd has formed and after the whey has been drained. Since no heat is added to the cheese blend when GanedenBC30 is put into the mix it allows the cheese to obtain the best amount of survivability of the probiotic. High temperature processes used by other dairies to kill potential pathogens also destroy the important digestive enzymes in cheese. Next Generation ages their cheeses a minimum of 60 days according to FDA regulation on raw milk cheese. This 60 day aging process allows the pH in the cheese to be lowered naturally, killing any potential pathogens.

GanedenBC30 probiotic overcomes the shortcomings of other commonly used probiotics in that it easily withstands industrial food manufacturing, extreme temperatures, and product shelf life. Other probiotic strains are highly sensitive to these demands.
